Michele “Mike” Montagano, 97, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 27, 2026, at Vancouver General Hospital, surrounded by the love of his family and friends. Born August 28, 1928, in Foggia, Italy, Mike began developing his mechanical skills after joining the US Army in Italy at age 14. He immigrated to Canada in 1951, eventually marrying Michelina Scelsa in 1956.
Mike was a master mechanic and a mechanical genius. His career took him to the coal mines of Trail, BC, the Alcan hydroelectric station in Kemano, and the aluminum smelter in Kitimat before settling in Vancouver. He operated two gas stations and later worked for the B.C. Equipment Company. A proud member of IUOE Local 115 since 1955, Mike famously participated in the development of Vancouver's first high-rise steel crane, being the only man at the time with the skills and nerve to climb the towers for repairs. If he needed a special tool, he made it. Retiring in 1988, Mike dedicated his time to hunting, fishing, organic gardening, building, and enjoying Italian cuisine with loved ones.
He is predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Michelina; his parents, Ottorino and Maria; and his sister Rose Bellusci. He is survived by his brother Antonio (Allise); daughter Maria Isabella; grandsons Trevor (Tacey) and Tyler; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
