Ming Chun SHUM was born on July 7, 1927, in the city of Suzhou, just outside of the greater Shanghai area in China. She became a teacher at a young age. In her early 20’s, she moved to continue her teaching career in the province of Jiangxi, where she met and married her husband Sau Kee MAN. In 1949, they moved to Hong Kong (HK), to escape the war and chaos in China.
She adjusted quickly to the language and life in HK and resumed her teaching career at a Lutheran school. Later, she would open up her own kindergarten school near the New Territory area in HK. Together with her husband, they worked hard, faced many challenges, but persevered to support their family, giving their two eldest daughters the opportunity to graduate from HK Baptist University.
In the mid 1970’s, led by her eldest daughter Marion, the family immigrated to Vancouver. With this move, she gave up her school, career, and identity. Yet she did this without reservation, because moving gave her two younger children the opportunity to further their education and attend university in Canada.
In Vancouver, she again adjusted quickly. She learned English and found a job in a garment factory, where she helped translate the instructions from the Canadian supervisors to the many Chinese workers. On the weekends, she would be busy volunteering at the Lutheran church, cooking meals for the congregation and acting as a translator during weekly homilies. She stopped working in 1985 so that she could care for her grandchildren.
Ming Chun SHUM will be remembered as a dedicated mother and grandmother. She was a fervent Christian and conducted herself with grace and humility. She had to be tough to deal with adversities, but hardly complained. She was loving and supportive to her family and friends. She will be deeply missed.
She was predeceased by her husband, Sau Kee Man, and her daughter Annitta Lee. She is survived by her children Marion Man and her husband Scott Shaw, Judy Man and her children Jesse Chan and wife Elena Wang, and Mason Chan, Henry Man and his wife Patti and their children, Jenessa and her husband Michael De Paolis, Aaron and Kristiann Man, and her grandson Simon Lee and his wife Amber Lo.
