It is with profound sadness and shock that we announce the unexpected passing of Nyet Tai (May) Chan, who went to be with Our Lord Jesus Christ at noon on Thursday, July 24th, 2025, at her residence in Vancouver, BC. She was 71 years old.
Nyet Tai was born on May 3rd, 1954, in Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia. She was the fourth of thirteen siblings and experienced a childhood marked by poverty, living by a riverbank with very little. Nyet Tai began helping her mother cook in the marketplace at a young age of seven, sacrificing her pursuit of education, and became the lifeline for her family. Her cooking was recognized by many returning customers in the marketplace. Her signature dishes will be remembered by those who have tasted her cooking in the years to come.
Life took a significant turn when, at 14, she and En Keong Chong became pen-pals. Discovering his faith, her curiosity led her to Jesus Christ. Nyet Tai was baptized and married En Keong when she turned 19. Together, they built a family and were blessed with five children: Paul (Nancy), Peter (Jennifer), Stephen (Danielle), James, and Janice. She is lovingly survived and profoundly missed by her husband En Keong Chong of 75 years. Her three cherished grandchildren, Nathanael, Matthew, and Christa, will forever remember her.
A true visionary, Nyet Tai was driven by a deep desire to provide a better future for her family. With the assistance of her in-laws, the entire family immigrated to Vancouver on April 22nd,1990. Despite lacking higher education, Nyet Tai worked tirelessly at various demanding jobs, including fish gutting at a fishery, working in a chicken slaughterhouse, and as a housekeeper. She dedicated her entire life to providing the best opportunities for her family despite her limitations with English and educational barriers. Her determination and persistence pushed her to endure hardship without the luxury of enjoying life until her retirement.
In her retirement, she found joy in gardening, sightseeing, photography, and collecting precious stones. However, it was her wholehearted pursuit of Jesus that brought her true and complete satisfaction. The same curiosity that initially led her to seek her Savior, continued to guide her in her final years. Nyet Tai finally found her peace and eternal rest in the arms of Jesus Christ.
Service details can be found below, and friends and family encouraged to leave messages of condolences, memories and upload photos below, as well.
