Madam Szeto Oi-To was born on January 11, 1925, in a village located in the County of Hoi Ping, Guangdong Province, China. Her father emigrated to the United States when she was a young girl, leaving behind her mother, she and her younger brother, Seto Fei, now of Toronto, Ontario. Her mother died in China at the age of 41, never to be reunited with her father.
In August 1944, she was betrothed at the tender age of nineteen to Mr. WOO Wah Kui with whom she sired three sons: Alfred WOO Thit Mun (Linda), Perry WU Kui Choi (Ping), and Stephen WU Kin On (Margaret). Following the untimely death of her first husband in 1953, she raised the children under the tutelage of the Woo/Wu Family Matriarch, LAU Yu Ho, while working as a seamstress to help support the family. Her pleasant outlook and unassuming manners caught the attention of Mr. Chu Leung with whom she married in June of 1959. She bored two more sons, Carman CHU Hon Wing (Kitty) and Christopher CHU Hon Wah (Victoria), before giving up hope of having any daughters.
Madam Szeto emigrated with her family to Canada in 1979 and settled in Edmonton, Alberta. Within two weeks of landing, and not knowing any
English, she found a seamstress position in a fine garments factory where she was gainfully employed for the next 14 years. In 1994, the family relocated to Vancouver. Upon the death of Mr. Chu Leung in 2004, she continued to live independently by herself until her passing.
Never vain or boisterous, Szeto Oi-To was humble, industrious, and frugal - yet generous. Nevertheless, her considerate and charitable nature belied an underlying stoicism. She persevered in her own quiet way, having endured hardships but ever faithful to the hope of a brighter future.
We have lost a loving mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother; the world has lost a fair and gentle maiden. Eternity will be kind to her.
