Otto was born in Guatemala City, Guatemala, on April 1, 1953. He lived the majority of his life in his home country, where he was known as a devoted Christian and a dedicated father to his three sons—Otto, Luis, and José—and his daughter, Lesly. In May 2002, he immigrated to Canada with his wife, Zonia, and their children José and Lesly, seeking greater opportunities and a brighter future for his family.
Otto was not only a father and a husband; he was a steady presence, a warm voice, a guiding hand. He lived his life with humility, but carried a strength that everyone around him could feel—a strength that didn’t need to be announced, only lived. Otto’s days were shaped by dedication. Dedication to the people he loved, to the responsibilities he carried, and to the values he believed in. Whether he was working, supporting a friend, or offering quiet encouragement to his children, he did everything with purpose. He was the kind of man whose love wasn’t loud, but deep. The kind of man whose family always knew they could rely on him whether for advice, comfort, or simply the reassurance that he was there.
In moments of joy, Otto’s smile could fill a room. In moments of difficulty, his resilience held his family together. 10 years ago in May of 2015, Otto received a double lung transplant due to pulmonary fibrosis. While the projected life expectancy following his lung transplant was eight years, by God’s mercy he surpassed even the greatest medical expectations.
A few months ago he was diagnosed with lymphoma in the liver and part of the intestines. Even though the word Cancer was scary doctors claimed it was treatable and there was hope to eliminate lymphoma with chemotherapy. The treatment brought difficult side effects such as punctures, blockages, and intense pain in his intestines. He underwent surgery to remove the damaged area. The operation went well, yet it caused complications with his transplanted lung and other organs, adding new challenges to his already courageous fight.
He was predeceased by his parents, José Raul and Marina; and his sister, Maria Estela.
Lovingly survived by his sons Otto, Luis, José and his daughter Lesly; his grandchildren, Diego, Raul, Alejandro, Luis, Maya, Miguelito, Adriana, and Raulito; his daughters in law Marielos and Niki; his son in law Miguel; his sisters Miriam and Yoli; and his beloved wife Zonia.
He leaves behind a legacy of strength, faith, love and generosity that touched everyone around him.
