Richard is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Jane; son Mark (Doreen); and siblings Wendy (John), Nancy (Norman), Diane (Gene), Donna (Robert), Janet and Michael (Terry).
Dick was born on April 6, 1938 in the Pon Yue District of Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, China to Chuck Him (Henry) Chu and Chow Shee Chu.
Dick and his mother immigrated to Canada in 1949 to reunite with his father. The family owned and operated grocery stores, the main one being Henry’s Foodland on Kingsway in South Burnaby. Dick owned and operated Henry’s Foodland for 35 years; first with his father Henry from 1955 until his father’s retirement in 1975, and afterwards with his wife Jane until their retirement in 1990.
Dick enjoyed a lengthy and full retirement, earning a black belt in tae kwon do, attending daily exercise groups in Central Park and travelling the world with Jane, and having his morning coffee at Metrotown McDonalds with friends.
The family would like to thank Dr Davidicus Wong for his care and dedication, and express our deep appreciation for the doctors, nurses and staff at Burnaby Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Burnaby Hospital Foundation.
