It is with great sadness that our family announces Don’s peaceful passing into God’s loving embrace, after resolutely keeping his cancer at bay for over two decades. Don is survived by his loving wife Marjorie, daughter Arlene and son Marvin (Nandini); as well as his caring brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews in Vancouver, Hamilton and Trinidad. He was predeceased by his parents, Maria Rubina and Joseph Theophilus, and brother, Allan.
Don was a shy, hardworking, gracious man of integrity, strength and kindness, who also had a warm and subtle sense of humor.
Born in beautiful Trinidad, Don came to Canada in 1955 to further his studies, graduating with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Manitoba followed by a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of BC. He enjoyed a vital career as a social worker and regional supervisor with the Ministry of Children and Families using his leadership skills and common sense to provide solutions for many BC families. In 2011 he received the Order of the Diocese of New Westminster in special recognition of having given over five decades of outstanding service in volunteer ministry with the Anglican church.
In his final weeks of life he was surrounded by many friends and family, sharing much love and laughter. We are most grateful for the wonderful care, kindness and support provided by the palliative care teams at St. Michael’s Hospice in Burnaby and North 52 at Surrey Memorial Hospital. We are particularly grateful for the pastoral care provided by our past and present pastors of St. Thomas Anglican Church where a Funeral Service will be held on September 26, 2015 at 11a.m. at 2444 East 41st Avenue, Vancouver, followed immediately by a Celebration of his Life. A visitation will be held at Ocean View Funeral Home, 4000 Imperial St., Burnaby on September 25 from 6 to 8 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Don’s name to the Alzheimer Society of BC, BC Cancer Foundation or St. Thomas Anglican Church.
