In 1961, Diocesan Boys' School (DBS) faced a daunting challenge in athletics. With the graduation of our top athletes, we rookies, including myself as the new Athletics Captain, were tasked with maintaining DBS's dominance in the Inter School Athletics Championship.

Our fortunes changed with the arrival of Mr. Leung Shiu Hay, then Hong Kong's 100-meter record holder. For seven months, Shiu Hay assisted Headmaster Jimmy Lowcock to rigorously train the DBS team. Their efforts bore fruit in the 1962 Championship, where DBS clinched all six relay gold medals across A, B, and C Grades. This performance, coupled with numerous individual silver and bronze medals, secured our title as Grade A Champion and brought unprecedented success in B and C Grades – a remarkable Grand Slam year.

The following year saw even greater triumphs. Our now-seasoned team dominated the 1963 Inter School Athletics Championship, achieving another grand slam across all grades. With the participation of Shiu Hay, we extended our success to the Hong Kong Open Athletics Championship, excelling in sprints and relays. 

Shiu Hay's impact on DBS athletics was transformative. His teachings – the bullet start, speed acceleration, and seamless baton exchanges – continues to resonate on the athletics field. Since leaving my beloved DBS in the summer of 1963,  I haven’t been meeting Shiu Hay. His memory will endure, a testament to his contribution in shaping a golden era of DBS athletics.

The last time Mr Roy Leung came to our DSOBA Vancouver Chapter monthly dinner gathering was in July 2023

Dear Mr. Leung, 

Thank you for all contributions you've made towards the education and athletic fields. Your work has been an inspiration  to many. 

You will be deeply remembered.

He coached and contributed to the DBS athletic program immensely to the liking of Mr. Lowcock or Har Gow Lo, the then DBS headmaster and securing the DBS domination in high school track and field for many years. With his dark- rimmed glasses, he always carried that wide signature smile of his on his face. At DBS, My image of Roy was his thundering through and shaking that ground near the 100m finish line many many times.

Roy brings back much great DBS memories.  He inspire lots of us P5 &  6 boys at that time to excel in track & field knowing that he represents HK in Asian games.  As a boarder, I often saw him practice on starting block in our field.  Roy was very friendly and nice to all of us.
Last exchange were several years ago via email with him as proud grandparents in Vancover.   A great loss indeed! May he rest in peace.

Uncle Roy, along with Isabella, lent me  such tremendous helping hands when I first arrived in Vancouver from Hong Kong back in 1994. They both welcomed me with open arms and family warmth that I dearly missed at the time. I was a really shy boy back then and did not properly reciprocate,  but they kept inviting me back to their family gatherings and special occasions all the while trying to make me feel comfortable and feel like home away from home knowing my immediate family was all very far away. 
I wish I could turn back the clock to redo it again but  with me being more brave in responding to their kindness in a  new, unfamiliar scene and environment.
I will forever be indebted to uncle Roy and Isabella for their generosity and selfless acts in such the time of need  and crucial life stage for myself.
Rest in peace, uncle Roy!
