Shaw Ling Ellen Cheng was born in Shanghai, China on May 18, 1930. She was the oldest of five children, all of whom now live in Canada or the USA (Teresa, Betty, Jim (Kelly), Roger (Hai Ping)). Ellen met her husband Danny in Taiwan, and they were married in October 1955. Together, they immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1967 with their two young children (Peter and Katy). Ellen studied English as a newcomer and was employed by SunLife Insurance.
In 1970, the family moved to Vancouver, BC and built a stable, happy environment to raise their children in. Ellen spent the rest of her working life employed by Sears Canada as a key punch operator. This was before computers – when data was entered by operators keying in on machines that punched holes in cards! Ellen was proud of her work and her ability to be part of the workforce while still caring for her husband and children.
During her retired years, Ellen enjoyed travelling with Danny, especially to Las Vegas and throughout Europe. Ellen also joined the many annual family reunions with her siblings who reside in the USA – these trips took place all over the continent, including California, Florida, New York, Connecticut, Banff, and Whistler.
Ellen will be remembered as a kind and generous friend. She was a thoughtful woman who was devoted and loving in all her roles: sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. Ellen was inspiring in her strength and independence; despite the many health issues she battled, she always maintained a positive outlook on life and appreciated every day she had. Ellen was the matriarch of our family, and we will miss her deeply. Her wisdom, love, and spirit remain in our hearts.
A visitation for Ellen's family will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2024, from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 3789 Royal Oak Ave, Burnaby, BC V5G 3M1.
