We regretfully announce the passing of Silvestro Nonis, age 90, of Vancouver BC on June 21, 2023. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Flavia, his four children, Claudio (Kim), Sandra (Paul), Andy (Irene), Diego (Carmela), his nine grandchildren, one grandson-in-law, his three great-grandsons, and his many nephews, nieces and brother and sister-in-laws.
Silvestro was born in Bagnarola Italy, a true Furlan. He left Italy for Canada in 1955 in search of a better life. Upon arriving in Canada, his first job was working on the Squamish highway. However, his trained profession was as a barber, which he returned to soon after. In 1977 he sold his barber shop and began his career at ACME Fire and Safety, where he worked for 34 years as a dedicated and valued employee until he retired in 2011.
Silvestro was an avid fisherman, spending his summers on the lake with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed playing bocce on the weekends and going on long walks around the neighborhood. He was an apple whisperer, always picking the best ones and sharing them with his family. He loved his garden, which was the most plentiful in the alley despite its size, and was always taking care of his tomatoes and cucumbers. Silvestro was a quiet man with a big heart, and he will be dearly missed by those that loved him.
Funeral mass will be held at St Francis of Assisi Parish, 2025 Napier Street, Vancouver BC on Thursday, July 6, 2023, at 1 pm. Entombment (South Mausoleum) and reception to follow at Ocean View Burial Park, 4000 Imperial St, Burnaby, BC. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or BC Children’s Hospital.
