Mrs. Su-Hsien (Susan) Nugent - 黃素賢, age 74, of Burnaby, British Columbia passed away on Saturday, November 19, 2022 after a courageous battle against cancer. She was loved and surrounded by her family and friends throughout this time.
Susan was born on November 23, 1947 in Guan Miao, Taiwan, as the third of six children. She is predeceased by her dear husband, Peter; father, Huang, Poo-Shou; mother, Huang, Chieuh-Shyh; and sister Huang, Su Kuan. She is survived by her loving family: including her sisters - Hwang, Su Ri, Huang, Su Xing, Huang, Su Chin; brother - Huang, Rong Bin; and sons Matthew (Nicole) and Sean (Charlotte). Susan adored her beloved grandsons Aiden (7) and Dylan (5). She loved and cherished time with her nieces and nephews – including Stephanie, Crystal, David, Anny, Jenny, Eric, Jennifer; her many grand nieces and grand nephews including Shelly, Nia, Tiana, Grace, Max, Alice, Lucas, Luise; and all of her extended family.
Susan was a bold and adventurous spirit; and travel was one of her greatest passions. After graduating from nursing school in Taiwan, Susan moved to Heidelberg Germany to work as a nurse for two years, until moving to Canada for her next adventure. It was in Vancouver that Susan met her beloved husband Peter, and they were married in 1980. Susan and Peter created a wonderful life together and provided unending love and support for their two sons, Matthew and Sean. Together they spent many happy times in her most peaceful getaway, Harrison Hot Springs.
Susan was a lifelong traveller and after retiring she continued this passion with friends and family. She ventured to all seven continents and her favourite mode of travel was the cruise ship. She lived life to the fullest, taking part in many activities on board the cruise ships; but her favourite activity of all was dance. She had a ballroom dancing trophy from one of her vacations proudly displayed in her living room.
Susan’s other great passion was people. She enjoyed bringing people together for quality time; and she had a way of making everyone feel welcome and cared for. She had many relationships that she cherished deeply with friends from her neighbourhood in North Burnaby, nursing colleagues, hiking groups, walking groups and many, many dance groups. She was a devoted volunteer with the Edmonds Senior Society, Burnaby Hospice, Fall Prevention and Bard on the Beach (including this past summer – her 18th year). For many years her weekly routine involved preparing sandwiches, snacks, refreshments and music for the community senior’s dance. She was awarded many volunteer awards over the years -including a “Local Hero Award” in 2014 for Outstanding Contributions to the Community, which her son Matthew proudly hung for her in her home.
One of Susan’s most wonderful features was her beautiful smile which was accompanied by her positivity and warmth. She will be deeply missed, always remembered, and forever loved by her friends and family.
