Tim Quan passed away peacefully at Vancouver General Hospital on November 27, 2020 at the age of 85. Tim is survived by his loving wife, Lisa (Lai Sheung); children, James (Sarah), Karen (Chuck H.), and Edmond (Anna); sister, Diane; and his grandchildren, Emma, Rebecca, Hannah, Liam, (James) Isaac (Karen), and Ventti (Edmond).
Tim was born on April 8, 1935 in Kaiping (Hoy Ping), Guangdong, China to Ging Chuck and Suey Wan Quan. As a young boy 10 to 13 years of age, he attended a boarding school from Monday to Saturday. He would walk home on Saturday afternoons and stay until Monday morning before walking back to school. At the tender age of 14, he journeyed halfway across the world to immigrate to Canada and meet his father for the very first time in Vancouver, BC. He attended Simon Fraser Elementary as a new Canadian to learn English. He then went on to graduate from the Fairview High School of Commerce with a graduating class of only 4 men in 1957. After working briefly at his father’s grocery store, he worked with B.C. Vegetable Co-op where he was the liaison with the farmers.
He married Lisa (Lai Sheung) in Vancouver on January 28, 1961. Over a period of 8 years, Tim and Lisa welcomed three children into their home. Tim became an accomplished baker and owner of several businesses. He began his baking career when he partnered with his brother-in-law, Kee Wong. They took over Mary’s Bakery in 1974. He then struck out on his own to open Tim’s Bakery and Tearoom on Commercial Drive. In 1986, he opened Upper Crust Bakery and Deli in the Marpole area, eventually retiring in 1999.
In his sunset years, he and his wife Lisa travelled extensively on cruises where he appreciated and experienced many cultures and their cuisine. When at home, he also enjoyed spending time with his beloved grandchildren and gardening in his backyard. He took great care and delight in his fig tree and winter melon harvests. He was a generous and dedicated husband and father who was passionate about baking, cooking, politics, art, and especially sports.
An intimate funeral service is scheduled for 1:00 pm on December 17, 2020 at Ocean View Funeral Home. The family would like to thank all the caregivers in the Cardiac Care Unit: especially doctors Davis, Fordyce, and Ramanathan; and nurses, Maria and Kevin; the Palliative Care Unit for their efforts, and a special note to nurses Keara and Mickey for their care and compassion for Tim and his family.
