November 27, 1916 - July 21, 2012
Our dear senior matriarch affectionately known as Aunty Vi, peacefully departed from us on July 21, 2012 in her 96th year. Survived by son Randall Buddy (Bev), daughter Barbara Lim (Ernest) in San Francisco and daughter-in-law Janice Wong. Grandchildren Elaine Yee and Edmund Lim in San Francisco, Jefferson Wong, Aynsley Meldrum and Hillary Wong. Great grandchildren Cristal Yee, Murray and Quinn Meldrum. Predeceased by son Benny (1998) and husband Willie (2001). Violet was born and raised in Vancouver's China Town. She was the middle child in a family sibling of 7. She was the last survivor. Trained and qualified as a barber at the age of 15, she owned and operated a barber shop business on Columbia Street during the 1930's until she married her husband Willie. They had a loving relationship which lasted for 61 years. As a young woman she was known as a stylish dresser with a wide circle of friends. Feisty and blunt Violet was always ready to give advice or to help others. Known as Aunty Vi, the senior family matriarch, she provided tribal cohesive glue for all members of the Wong and Joe families. She also frequently welcomed and received family and friends into her home and provided decades of lavish home cooked meals. She was a matriarchal force to behold. Her role as matriarchal glue will likely pass to her daughter-in-law Bev. They share similar mothering sentiments and understanding of family cohesiveness. The family would like to express its deep appreciation to the doctors, nurses and caregivers, especially Archie and Rachel, at Point Grey Private Hospital where Violet resided, for their dedicated and affectionate care of her for the last 2 1/2 years of her life. There will be a celebration of Violet's life on Saturday, August 4 2012, 2:30 p.m. at Forest Lawn Chapel in Burnaby with graveside interment to follow. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to your favourite charity. Aunty Vi would certainly have approved with a matriarchal smile and nod.
