It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our father, Wai Fat Chui 徐威發, born 27 July 1937. Wai was a vital, strong, and athletic man who died peacefully in his sleep on 11 August 2021 at his home in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
He was a self-made man who came to Canada from Hong Kong in 1962. He graduated from UBC Engineering (where he met Winnie So) and went on to have his own housing development company, Wafa Homes, for almost 50 years in Edmonton, Alberta. Wai loved travelling, swimming in the ocean, all kinds of individual sports and hotels with a good view.
He could be found waterskiing at Club Med tropical holidays throughout the 1990s, and was an avid runner for the last 25+ years, completing about 30 Marathons including his favourites in Vancouver, Victoria and Hong Kong.
Wai leaves behind his three daughters, Michelle (Dave), Maureen Mo-Ling (David), Melissa (Mike) and their mother Winifred Woon Yee Chui, as well as five granddaughters (Anna and Alice Gardiner, Phoenix Cuesta, Maya and Misha Low).
His independence, integrity, strength and down-to-earth spirit has, and will carry on to next generations. Wai will be also be dearly missed by the CIs - his lifelong group of friends from QES Secondary School in Hong Kong and all over the world.
Wai was the 80+ year old with a six-pack and good tan, always encouraging his family and friends to be active and exercise. Therefore we ask that in lieu of flowers, please donate to Kidsport BC, an organization that grants young people opportunities to participate in sports programs at:
Chui Wai Fat will always be in our hearts and minds saying “Just do it - again!”
There will be an outdoor graveside service at Ocean View for a limited number of local close family and friends. For invitation information please contact [email protected].
There will also be an online Celebration of Life on Zoom, Saturday 4 September 2021 at 6pm PST.
