Wing Kai was born and raised in Guangzhou, China. While his grandfather and father were early Chinese workers in Canada, Wing Kai supported his mother and younger sister back at home and became a resourceful provider at a young age. He pursued the study of engineering and excelled in a technical high school where he met his future wife Hang Lau Chik. They were married in 1953 and soon grew their family to include two sons and three daughters.
In pursuit of greater opportunities, all of Wing Kai's family moved to Hong Kong by 1962 and to Canada in 1971. While in Hong Kong, he worked as a building maintenance engineer while his wife worked as the city's first female water quality analyst. The family shared many fond memories with their extended families in the bustling international hub of Hong Kong during this time. Upon their move to Canada, the couple and their children continued to work hard. He was proud to see all five of his children graduate from the University of British Columbia and begin careers, families and pursuits of their own. Wing Kai eventually accepted a role as an air conditioning maintenance mechanic at Simon Fraser University where he worked until he retired in 1997. In their golden years, Wing Kai and Hang Lau traveled all over the world together, celebrating a lifetime of partnership and adventure.
Wing Kai enjoyed ballroom dancing, swimming, and cooking for the family. He was an avid movie fan and a home researcher of remedies for diabetes and other ailments (although he would still sneak in a snack or two). Most of all, Wing Kai's favourite activity was spending time with his dear wife, Hang Lau.
His strong work ethic and commitment to his family will always be remembered by those who knew and loved him. Wing Kai is survived and missed by his loving wife of 73 years, Hang Lau; his children Keith (Yuko), Joyce (the late Samsun), Rosanna (Patrick), Roselyn (Norman) and Derek (Sheree); his grandchildren Gloria (Herbert), Garrick (Navrup), Amanda (Darrell), Jennifer (Robert), Kevin (Jenny), Melissa, Kyle, Isabel, Connor, and Meghan; and his great grandchildren Arjun, Jason, Kesar and Bryan.
