He is predeceased by his wife, So Chi, in 2016, and daughter, Donna, in 2020, and is survived by his three daughters, Linda, Sandra, and Sophia (Jeff), and his six grandchildren, Mikayla, Ryan, Kelena, Cassia, Dayna, and Tierra.
Wing Yue Wong was born on January 14, 1925, in Toisan, China, the fourth of five sons. In 1942, he married So Chi at the age of 17. In 1949, Wing Yue and his father immigrated to Canada, initially arriving in Victoria, BC, before settling in Vancouver, BC. His first job was as a dishwasher in Chinatown, and he later became a cook at Canadian Pacific Railway Steamship, a position he held for many years. After leaving CPR, he worked for a door company for three years. In 1966, he began a 25-year career with BC Ferries.
During all this time, our dad taught himself how to speak, read and write in English, showcasing his intelligence and determination. Wing Yue’s passion for life was evident in his diverse hobbies, including a love for sports, particularly hockey. Family bonding reached its pinnacle during the 1982 and 1994 Stanley Cup Playoffs, where our shared excitement for the Vancouver Canucks brought joy to the Wong household.
Dad enjoyed many hobbies. To stay active, dad and mom, along with their close friends, would go to Queen Elizabeth Park to walk and exercise. In the 1960’s and 70’s, he was actively involved with Hon Hsing Athletic Club where we all attended their annual Chinese New Year festivities. Dad also played mah-jong with his close friends, and although he did play at the Athletic Club and at the Wong’s Benevolent Association, he mostly played at home or at a friend’s house.
Known for his culinary skills, Wing Yue’s homemade apple pies were legendary, creating cherished family moments. In his later years, he faced life's challenges with resilience, moving to S.U.C.C.E.S.S Pender Residence and later to Banfield at Villa Cathay. Wing Yue Wong's legacy is one of courage, hard work, and love for family. His remarkable journey from an unfamiliar land to building a fulfilling life in Canada is a testament to his bravery. Dad, you will be profoundly missed, but your enduring love and the opportunities you paved for us will be cherished forever.
