Elder Yong-Hwa Choi

Mr. Yong-Hwa Choi, age 88, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2024, at home in Vancouver, surrounded by loving family and friends.

Mr. Choi was born on November 20, 1935, in Sariwon, Korea, to Reverend Wha-Jung Choi and Sun-Joon Yu. After a narrow escape to Seoul during the Korean War, he pursued his lifelong passion and profession in music as a pianist, organist, vocalist, conductor, and music teacher. His life was filled with faith and music, and his talent was and is still evident in the recordings of his music. He attended Yonsei, Soongsil, and Kyung Hee Universities. In 1962, he fell deeply in love and married Kyeong-Ran Chung, and they raised three beautiful children together.

Mr. Choi continued his flourishing music career until he and his family immigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1975. There, he was a conscientious, honest and well-respected man who owned and operated several small businesses for many decades. As a first-generation immigrant, he embraced the immense challenges of moving across the world and strove to provide a good education and opportunities for his children to lead prosperous, fulfilled lives.

Mr. Choi remained heavily involved in the performing arts and served as a longtime choir director at the Korean Canadian Presbyterian Church of Montreal, where he was also a founding member and elder. He also directed and organized multi-church united choir concerts across Montreal. In 2004, he relocated to Vancouver with his wife and spent his retirement in Burnaby, BC where he became a faithful member and retired-elder of Samsung Presbyterian Church.

Alongside his love of music, Mr. Choi was an avid golfer, spirited globe-trotter and known by some as the “MacGyver” handyman fixing all sorts of things around the house, whether they were broken or not. He loved his Caribbean meat pies and peering through infographic books about dog breeds as he bonded with family pets like Mojo and Max. His greatest joy was playing Korean games such as yutnori with his grandchildren as he taught them the art and skill of fierce competition combined with roaring laughter.

Throughout his storied life, enduring a war, myriad health issues as well as other challenges, Mr. Choi remained resolutely devoted to God and his Christian values. He was led by his faith in Jesus. Although he was a man of few words, he reflected God’s love and presence in his church and family by serving as a pillar and ever-present bedrock of profound stability, expressing his love by offering his favorite foods (as Koreans do), and bringing quiet contentment and an easy spirit to his children and grandchildren. He is and will be dearly missed but will forever live joyously in the minds, hearts, and souls of all who knew him.

Mr. Choi leaves behind his beloved wife, Kyeong-Ran, his three children Sharon, William, and Semi, and their respective spouses Norman, Genevieve, and Hyunsuk, as well as his nine grandchildren Jennifer, Matthew, Emilie-Anne, Olivia, Samuel, Cedric, Eden, Arielle, and Jordan. He is also survived by three of his cherished five siblings, and many wonderful nieces, nephews, and in-laws.

2024년 6월 29일, 향년 88세에 최영화 장로님께서 하나님의 품에 안기셨습니다. 장로님은 밴쿠버 자택에서 가족과 성도님들의 따뜻한 사랑 속에 평화롭게 마지막 순간을 맞이하셨습니다.

신앙과 음악으로 가득한 삶을 사셨던 최장로님은, 1935년 11월 20일에 한국 황해도 사리원(지금은 북한땅)에서 최화정 목사님과 유선준 사모님 사이에서 4남, 2녀중 차남으로 출생하셨습니다. 한국전쟁 중 서울로 피난하신 후, 피아니스트, 오르가니스트, 보컬리스트, 지휘자 및 음악 교사로서의 평생직업을 열정으로 추구하며 사셨습니다. 장로님의 음악적 재능은 녹음된 여러곡 들이 남겨져있어서 아직도 여러사람들 마음에 기억되고 있습니다. 연세, 숭실, 경희대학교를 다니셨고, 1962년, 사랑하는 정경란 권사님과 결혼하여 세 자녀를 낳아 키우셨습니다.

최장로님의 음악 여정은 1975년에 가족들과 함께 캐나다로 이민할 때까지 지속적으로 이어졌고, 캐나다에선 여러 소규모 사업체를 수십 년 동안 성실히 관리하고 운영하시며, 많은분들에게 존경받으신 성실하시고 정직한 분이셨습니다. 1세대 이민자로서 새로운 언어와 문화의 엄청난 도전에 맞서 자녀들에게 만족스러운 삶을 살 수 있고, 좋은 교육과 여러길로 삶의 최선의 기회 제공하기 위해 노력하셨습니다.

최장로님은 음악에대한 열정을 캐나다에서도 계속이어 갔습니다. 몬트리올 한인 장로교회에서 오랫동안 성가대 지휘자로 봉사하셨으며, 장로이자 창립 멤버로 헌신 하셨습니다. 또한 몬트리올 전역의 다교회 연합 합창 콘서트를 조직하는 데 주도적인 역할을 하시며 도움을 주었습니다.

2004년 은퇴한 후, BC주 밴쿠버로 이주하여 버나비에서 은퇴 생활을 보내셨으며, 밴쿠버 삼성교회의 충실한 교인이자 은퇴장로로 활동했습니다.

음악에 대한 사랑과 더불어, 최장로님은 여행과 골프를 즐기시며, 집에 관련된 여러가지 고장난 부분들을 직접 손보시고 고치시는 "맥가이버" 로 여가 시간을 보내셨습니다.

장로님이 즐겨하시던 음식은 캐리비안 고기 파이셨고, 반려견에 관한 책을 보시는 것을 즐겨하시며, 가족이 기르던 모조(Mojo)와 맥스(Max)를 엄청 아끼고 좋아 하셨습니다.

최장로님은 명절때마다 손주들과 함께 윷놀이 등 여러 한국 놀이를 크게 웃으시며 즐기시면서, 열정적으로 한국의 문화를 손주들에게 가르쳐주셨습니다.

최장로님은 어린시절에 겪으신 고된 피난의 여정과, 캐나다 이민후 수많은 건강 문제 및 여러 어려움을 견디고 이겨내셨고, 장로님의 삶 전체를 하나님만을 의지하시는 믿음으로 신앙을 굳건히 지켜나가셨습니다. 최장로님은 가정의 든든한 기둥으로서 몸소 살아계신 하나님의 사랑을 평상시 삶을 통하여 가족들에게 보여주셨고, 평소에 즐기시는 음식들을 가족과 함께 나누면서 늘 잔잔히 사랑을 베풀어주셔서, 자녀와 손자들에게 늘 마음을 편안하게 해주시는 분이시었으며, 장로님을 아시고 기억하는 여러분들의 마음속에 행복한 추억으로 남아있습니다.

최영화 장로님은 사랑하는 아내 정경란 권사님과 세 자녀 최선미, 최원식, 최세미와 그들의 배우자 노먼, 제네비브, 현석, 그리고 아홉 명의 손주들 세원, 마태, 세영, 세원, 세종, 세드릭, 세란, 세희, 세홍을 남겨두고 떠나셨습니다. 또한 그의 다섯 형제 중 세 형제와 많은 조카들, 그리고 친인척들도 그를 사랑하고 기억하고 있습니다.
