Floyd Watson, 92, of Bertram died February 18, 2014 in Georgetown, surrounded by his nieces and nephews. He was born January 7, 1922 at Trigger Mountain in Mills County, Texas to Bennie B. and Della Watson. He was proud to say that he graduated from Oatmeal High School. He married Letha Mae Sylvester in 1947.
Floyd was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Bertram. Carpentry was his trade, but farming and ranching was his passion.
In 1938, when he was 16, he was one of about 60 men who showed up at the local drugstore in response to a newspaper ad recruiting workers to build the electric lines that first brought electricity to the central Texas area. This past year as Pedernales Electric Coop celebrated 75 years of service they recognized Watson as one of the few men still living who had worked on the original lines.
Floyd served in the US Navy with the Seabees in World War II. Landing in the Pacific soon after the Marines, the Seabees built airstrips, roads, gasoline and water storage tanks and Quonset huts for storage and housing.
Returning home after the war he continued with his carpentry trade, building and supervising many commercial buildings in the Austin area.
He spent his last years doing what he loved: farming and ranching. He loved to smell the freshly plowed ground and took great pleasure in tending his cattle and sheep.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Letha Sylvester Watson; brothers, Vernon Watson, Bendal Watson, T. D. Watson, and Roy Watson; sisters Delma Hibler, Fannie Klose and Donella Floyd.
