She was baptized at Memorial Lutheran Church in Texas City and confirmed and married at Faith Lutheran Church in Fort Worth while her family was serving there. Janet grew up in a close-knit Lutheran family and carried her strong faith throughout her life. She attended Texas Lutheran College in Seguin, where she met the love of her life, Robert Charles Bohmann. They were married on August 8, 1970, and began a life together centered on family, faith, and service to others. She later graduated from the University of Texas.
Janet devoted her professional life to education, serving as a third-grade teacher with the Austin Independent School District for twenty-nine years. During her career, she taught at Hill, Barrington, Metz, Harris, and Casis Elementary Schools. She had a gift for connecting with her students and was a steady and caring presence in their lives. After retiring, she continued her calling as a substitute teacher for many years, remaining connected to the classroom and the students she loved.
At home, Janet was the heart of her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who took great pride in maintaining family traditions and creating meaningful celebrations. Holidays were especially important to her, and she became known for her elaborate and carefully curated decorations, often spending days arranging every detail. Her home was a place of warmth, welcome, and joy for family and friends.
Affectionately known as “Nonnie,” Janet especially treasured her grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in her heart. She had a gift for making every child feel uniquely loved and valued, and she delighted in celebrating birthdays and special occasions with creativity and care.
Janet had a deep love for plants and gardening and found happiness in tending to her home and surroundings. She also enjoyed watching University of Texas sports and staying connected with friends and family, often sharing in the excitement of games through calls and messages. She took great joy in writing letters and cards, each one thoughtfully prepared with stickers and special touches that made them unmistakably hers, and she treasured the letters she received in return. She had an eye for detail and a remarkable memory, always remembering the small things that mattered to others.
Her faith remained a guiding force throughout her life, shaped early in her childhood and strengthened through every season that followed. It provided her comfort, strength, and connection to others, and she shared that faith with her many friends and loved ones.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Henry Walter Engeling and Loretta Martha Engeling.
She will be dearly missed by her loving husband of fifty-five years, Robert Charles Bohmann; her children, David Robert Bohmann, Sarah Bohmann Sanchez and her husband, Alfred Jr., and Michael Charles Bohmann; her grandchildren, Jackson and Max Bohmann; Rachel Vallejo and her husband, Jacob, and Jacob Sanchez; Vincent and Elise Bohmann; Maddison Finney; and Natalea Collie; and great-granddaughter, Elaina Vallejo. She is also survived by her brother, Mark Engeling (Ann), and her sister, Kay Melton (Keith), along with many nieces, nephews, and cherished friends.
Janet is at peace with her Lord, and her love will live on in the family and traditions she cherished so deeply.
