Joshua David Alexander, a resident of Houston, TX, passed away on February 26, 2024 at the age of 96. Josh, as he was called by all, was born on October 26, 1927 at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston, TX to parents John Willard and Neva Waller Alexander.
Josh was preceded in death by wife Grace, brothers Jay and Charles, sisters Elizabeth and Jeanie. Josh is survived by three children- son Robert Alexander and wife Terrye, son Steve Alexander and wife Pamela, and daughter Linda Alexander; five grandchildren- Michaela, Erin, Steve, Jr., Melissa, and Matthew; two great-grandchildren, Roman and Paul III; and three nieces- Diane Simmons, husband Fred; Carolyn Curley, husband Ken; and Janice Wycoff, husband Thomas.
After growing up in Oklahoma, Josh’s family relocated to Galveston. As a young married man setting out on his own, Josh moved his family as work dictated. Early homes included Texas City, Houston and El Paso. He returned to Galveston where for many years he worked as a shipping clerk on the Galveston Waterfront.
After retirement, he and brother Charles built a lovely home on the shores of Lake Buchanan in Central Texas, where he and Grace lived for almost 20 years. During those years on the lakefront, both children and grandchildren enjoyed many days of swimming, fishing, boating on the lake and walking the rows of daylilies carefully nurtured by Grace. Daylilies were a passion instilled in Grace by her mother-in-law, Neva, an expert cultivator, whose many varieties, including Rosie Meyer, are still in demand today.
Josh was an avid sportsman, enjoying many days outdoors hunting and fishing, and enjoying his greatest passion- golf. Golfing was a sport he excelled at. He golfed well into his 80’s, but stopped when he could no longer find just the right club that would make the ball sail as straight and as far as it had in the past. His many years of life might be traced back to those long walks on green grass swinging a golf club.
After Grace’s passing in December 2005, Josh re-located to the Richwood-Lake Jackson area, a place he and Grace visited many times during daylily conventions. Josh remained in Lake Jackson for many years before moving to The Shores of Clear Lake before his passing. The family wishes to thank the staff at The Shores for taking such good care of him during the last year of his life. They also want to thank North Star Hospice, especially Susanne and Ariel, for their tireless efforts to make Josh as comfortable as possible before his passing.
Josh is now buried next to his greatest love, Grace, in Lakeland Hills Memorial Park located on Park Road 4 between Burnet and Marble Falls, Texas. His brothers Jay and Charles, and sister-in-law, Dolores, are buried nearby.
