Samuel L. Gwin, lovingly known as Sam or “Sammy,” passed away on January 22, 2026, at the age of 58 in a tragic car accident alongside his fiancée, Tracy Stephens. Born on March 23, 1967, Sam grew up in Lytle, Texas, where he graduated from Lytle High School in 1985.
Sam worked for the City of Liberty Hill as a Water Operator, where he was known for his steady reliability, warm personality, and the smile he seemed to carry everywhere he went. His kindness, compassion, and good-hearted nature made him beloved by everyone who knew him.
Animals were one of Sam’s greatest joys. He especially loved cats and chickens and raised chickens throughout his life. His affection for them ran so deep that he refused to eat chicken—a fact that always made his family smile.
Sam is survived by his four children: Justin Gwin (wife Carolina), Ashley Chesnut, Tyler Gwin (wife Jennifer), and Zachary Gwin; and by his seven grandchildren, with an eighth on the way. He is also survived by his father, James Gwin; his sisters, Annie Gwin and Becky Passmore; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Judy Jones Gwin; his son-in-law, Justin Chesnut; and his brother-in-law, Thomas O’Neill.
Sammy will be cremated, and a memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home, 306 E. Polk St., Burnet, Texas. Please dress casual western and in his honor wear your favorite baseball hat.
Sam’s gentle spirit, constant smile, and the love he had for the people and animals around him will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and cherished him.
