February 17, 1926-November 7, 2012
Daphne Murray, beloved wife (of 51 years), mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother passed away in Burney, CA on November 7, 2012 at the age of 86. She is survived by her sons (and their wives) Ron and Wanda Graves of McArthur, CA, Steve and Isy Graves of Keaau, HI, Dale and Claudia Graves of Burney, CA, Loren and Judy Murray of Granite Bay, CA. She also leaves behind her grandchildren Ken, Tonya, Steve Jr., Tim, Angela, Belinda, Randy, Robbie, Candi, Risha, Tiffany and Austin.
Daphne Lucy Ward was born February 17, 1926 near Bournemouth, England. She grew up in the Pimlico District of London near Victoria Station. In 1942, at the age of 16, Daphne joined the Women's Junior Air Corps and was stationed at Ramsgate (west of London on the English Channel) as an enemy aircraft spotter. Her duty was to identify aircraft type and number and report this to the British military.
Daphne moved to the United States in 1947 and lived in both Redding and Little Valley, CA before settling down with her husband, Loren "Mert" Murray, and their family in McArthur, CA, where she lived for the next 47 years. Raising four boys meant that Daphne, a city girl from London, needed to adapt to her new life and learn to hunt, fish, and prepare game. Fortunately, she always loved the outdoors and welcomed this new adventure.
Daphne worked at Mayers Memorial Hospital as a nurse and an X-ray technician, and eventually as an assistant administrator. Although she worked full-time, Daphne still made the time to help her boys with homework and serve, for a time, as a Cub Scout Den Mother.
Graveside services will be held at 12:00 P.M. Thursday, November 15, 2012 in McArthur, CA. at Pine Grove Cemetery. A reception will follow at Little Country Church on Main Street in McArthur.
