Abigail Joy Zylstra, age 24, passed away July 12, 2025. She was born August 23, 2000, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and grew up in Byron Center, where she graduated summa cum laude from Byron Center High School in 2019.
She is deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her parents Shane and Kathy Holwerda and Ron Zylstra; siblings Caleb Zylstra (Abby), Isabella Zylstra, and Gideon Zylstra; grandparents Terry Johnson and Barb and Bob Holwerda; and stepsiblings Rhett (Jess) Holwerda, Tyler (April) Holwerda, and Brandon (Lizette) Simons. She is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. Abby was preceded in death by her grandparents Geziena and Edwin Zylstra.
Abby was known for her playful spirit, kind heart, and unwavering acceptance of others. She had a brilliant mind, a vivid imagination, and a love for both people and animals. As a child, she was the one who brought the ideas for backyard games; as an adult, she brought the board games and laughter to gatherings. Her deep affection for animals, especially dogs, made her a walking encyclopedia of animal knowledge and training tips.
She was a dedicated gymnast for over a decade, involved in both recreational and competitive gymnastics. Affectionately called “Abby-Doll” and “Upside-down Girl,” she was often seen walking on her hands, flipping through the yard, or tumbling with joy. In high school, Abby was also involved in both band and tennis—balancing academics, athletics, and the arts with grace and enthusiasm.
Abby graduated from Grand Valley State University’s Honors College in December 2022 with a degree in behavioral neuroscience. She worked as a paraprofessional at Byron Center Public Schools before spending a year teaching with AmeriCorps in St. Louis, Missouri. Her time there sparked a deep passion for teaching and led her to pursue a master’s degree in Finland at the University of Eastern Finland.
Abby’s light, love, and legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Though her time with us was far too short, we know that Abby loved the Lord and we believe she is at peace, smiling and dancing, held in His perfect love.
Celebration of Abby’s life will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, July 26, 2025, with visitation beginning at 1 p.m., at Cook Funeral Home, 2067 84th Street SW, Byron Center, Michigan 49315.
In lieu of flowers and in honor of Abby, contributions may be made to Hand2Hand Ministries. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresbyron.com in their guestbook online.
