Frederick Arthur Slager, age 88 of Byron Center, went to be with his Heavenly Father Monday, January 1, 2024. He was raised in Cutlerville, MI, and attended the Grand Rapids Christian schools. As a young man, Fred couldn’t hide his enthusiasm and love for cars, and could be seen showing off his 1953 Ford 2-door convertible. Fred spent most of his career working for the office furniture manufacturer, Steelcase, in their desk plant, finally retiring from his supervisory position in their steel receiving department.
In addition to playing Bingo and Euchre, Fred enjoyed many outdoor sports including golf, boating, hunting, and especially fishing on Gun Lake, MI and in Punta Gorda, FL. No matter the season, you would readily see him on a riverbank, a pier, in his boat, or on the ice enjoying his favorite pastime. And he made sure his children had a chance to share in his many fishing excursions. Fred loved and lived life to its fullest; his wit, charm, smile, sense of humor, and selflessness were adored by all.
Fred cherished sharing his time with family. Whether it be his wife Ruth, who he was married to and adored for 68 years, his four children, 13 grandchildren, or 19 great-grandchildren, Fred wanted his family close.
He loved his Lord Jesus, delighted in serving within the church, and could always be called upon to give the most uplifting prayer. Even near the end, he would frequently end his day in the Word.
A special thank you to the staff at Rivertown Ridge and Elara Hospice for the tremendous love and care they provided.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, January 13, 2024, with a visitation starting prior at 10 a.m. at Byron Center United Methodist Church, 2490 Prescott St. SW, Byron Center, MI. The family cordially invites everyone for a luncheon and a time of fellowship at noon. The family welcomes memories and messages www.cookcaresbyron.com in their guest book online.
