Gerald Koning, age 86 of Byron Center, finished his life of service to the Lord and entered his eternal home on Friday, November 27, 2020. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many.
Jerry was born on December 27, 1933, in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Ilo and Velda (Fetterhof) Koning. He was the sixth of 12 children and is survived by brothers Robert, Jack, and Dave Koning; and sisters Sharon Swan and Chris Sund.
He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife of 64 years, Jana (Gabrielse) Koning; children Susan (Patrick) Lewis, Daniel (Melinda) Koning, Sandra (Bo) Smiley, and David (Jennifer) Koning; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Jerry served his country in the Air Force from 1950 to 1954 and spent most of his time in Korea during
the Korean Conflict. He met Jana upon returning home and they married on August 3, 1956. Always a hardworker, Jerry worked for Meijer, Inc., working his way up from unloading boxcars to several management positions in the Warehouse Distribution Center, Walker, Michigan. He loved hunting, fishing, building, and fixing things, but he most loved reading his Bible and serving the Lord. He lovingly shared his faith with everyone he met and always looked for a chance to share the Gospel. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Grandville Bible Church Missions fund, 4122 44th St. SW, Grandville, MI 49418.
Burial services will be held with the immediate family, with Pastor Tom Couch officiating, on December 12, 2020 at Winchester Cemetery in Byron Township. Due to the current health crisis, a Celebration of Life Memorial service will be held at a later date.
