

Harvey John Dykema, age 90, devoted follower of Jesus Christ and His faithful servant, was called home Sunday, July 28, 2024. He grew up on the family farm in Jenison and entered the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. He married Elaine (Christian) March 19, 1954. They enjoyed 61 years of marriage before Elaine's passing in 2015. After serving in the military, he worked for the railroad (CXS) for over 43 years, retiring in 1995. They enjoyed camping, traveling, and serving the church. He served in every position at Byron Center First Reformed Church - elder, deacon, Sunday school superintendent, and teacher, catechism teacher, and grounds keeper. Harvey loved the church.
Harvey was loved and will be dearly missed by his children Doug (Leah) Dykema, Dale (Deb) Dykema, Randy (Michelle) Dykema; grandchildren Rev. Brian (Sarah), David (Laurel), Caleb, Abby (Matt), Jesse (Casia), Lydia, Moriah (Gabe), Alivia (Casey), Aaron (Franny), and Avery; precious great-children Riley, Bayla, Carson, Isaiah, Judah, Ealdwin, Rowan, Brooklyn, Autumn; siblings Tressa Behrens, Jane (Larry) Kerkstra; siblings-in-law Arlene Christian, Mary Lou Christian, Janice (Fred) Souffrou, Gloria Dykema; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Dykema (Christian); and siblings Kenneth (Bonnie) Dykema, Harriet (Harvey) Van Dyke, Gordon Dykema.
Harvey was always described as kind and gentle, ready to help where needed. It was all true.
The family would like to thank the Rose Garden staff for their kind and loving care for Dad over the last year and a half.
Visitation will be held 5-8 p.m. Thursday, August 8, 2024 at Cook Funeral Home, 2067 84th St. SW, Byron Center, Michigan. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, August 9, at The Well Byron Center, 8425 Byron Center Ave. SW, Byron Center, with visitation prior to the service beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Winchester Cemetery.
