

Maxine Joyce Doornbos, age 87, went to be with her Lord Tuesday, January 23, 2024. Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Doornbos; parents Peter and Douwina Zwyghuizen. She will be remembered by her children Donna (Fred) VanderPloeg, Diane (Harry) VanDyk, Dean (Ruth) Doornbos, Darla (Doug) Tilma, Doreen (Randy) Lutz, Denise (Sherwin) Kerkstra, Drew (Shelly) Doornbos, Deb (Brett) Dykema, Dana (Dale) Veldhouse, and Darlene Verstraete; 59 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; siblings Ray Zwyghuizen, Sharon (Rick) Bode, and Beatrice VanHouten; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Maxine was born and raised in Wyoming, MI. She graduated from Grand Rapids Christian High School. She married her husband of 48 years, Alvin, in 1957, and together raised ten children in Byron Center, MI. Maxine graduated from college with an LPN degree. Throughout her years, she also was very involved with her church and community. She volunteered for many years at the voting polls. She loved her garden of flowers, watching birds, and her cuckoo clock. However, the most important part of her life was being a loving and supportive wife, mother, and grandmother. She led her family with the strength and guidance from her Christian faith. She loved the Lord and she was a faithful servant to the end.
Visitation with friends and relatives will take place from 5-8 p.m. Friday, January 26, 2024 at First Byron CRC, 8541 Byron Center Ave. SW, Byron Center, MI 49315. A celebration of Maxine’s life will commence 11 a.m., with visitation one hour prior, Saturday, January 27, 2024 at First Byron CRC. Pastor Richard Hartwell will be officiating. In honor of Maxine and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Byron Center Christian School. Interment will be at Winchester Cemetery.
