Ronald Calvin Overton, age 81, went to his heavenly home Saturday, January 11, 2025. Affectionately known as "Ron," "Ronny," and husband, father, grandpa (Gramps). Ron lived a beautiful life dedicated to his family, faith, and service to others.
Born in Bay Shore, NY on Long Island to Calvin and Marie Overton, Ron's life was marked by dedication and hard work. He served his country honorably as a flight mechanic on a C-120 cargo ship, flying dangerous missions delivering missiles and equipment to various islands in Vietnam. Upon returning home to West Sayville, he continued his commitment to service as a volunteer fireman.
Ron went on to build a distinguished 23-year career with the Michigan Department of Corrections, Richard A. Handlon Correctional Facility (MDOC), where he retired as Captain in 2000. After retirement, he pursued his passion for auto air-conditioning, spending many enjoyable hours working alongside his brother-in-law, Harold Bailey, at Harold's Auto Body. He also dedicated six years to "snow birding" and found joy in wood and chainsaw carving.
A man of deep faith, Ron read his Bible every night and shared his love for the Lord with his beloved wife, Norma. His strong work ethic, a characteristic of the Overton family, was matched only by his love for fishing and the simple pleasures of life.
Ron was preceded in death by his older brother, Bob; mother, Marie Van Essendelft; and father, Calvin Overton. He leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory: his wife, Norma Overton; daughters Melody (Scott) Brownlie and Ronda Overton; stepchildren LeAnne Tanner, Sean (Bella) Tanner, Dusty (Kerri) Johnson, and Stacey Tanner; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nephew, Rob (Dawn) Overton; cherished friends Timothy (Bev) Gerke; and brother-in-law, Harold (Bev) Bailey.
As a husband, father, grandpa, and great-grandpa, Ron's presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His legacy of faith, service, and dedication will continue to inspire future generations.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 14, 2025 at Cook Funeral Home (Byron Center Chapel), 2067 84th St. SW, Byron Center, MI 49315, with visitation from 10-10:45 a.m. prior to the service. In memory of Ron and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fishing With Veterans. The family welcomes memories and messages at www.cookcaresbyron.com in Ron’s online guestbook.
