Shirley Jane Smith, age 87, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 30, 2025 in Byron Center, Michigan. Shirley had an artistic eye and loved crafting ceramics, specifically painting them. She loved spending winters in St. Petersburg, Florida with Russell. She enjoyed baking, cooking, and making a warm and inviting home for her family. Shirley cherished each moment spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Shirley will be deeply missed by her husband of 65 years, Russell Smith; children Jeff Smith, Susan (John) Frelitz, Dan (Kim) Smith; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Pat Barnhart; and many extended family and friends.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Archie and Neva Barnhart; sister, Charlene Barnhart; and daughter-in-law, Lori Smith.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday, August 1, 2025 at Cook Funeral Home – Byron Center Chapel, 2067 84th St. SW, Byron Center, MI 49315. A funeral service celebrating Shirley’s life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, August 2, 2025 at Cook Funeral Home – Byron Center Chapel, with visitation one hour prior.
