Born in Fondi, Italy, on December 13, 1930, to Antonio Schibono and Benedetta Riccardi, Antonio was a devoted husband, a loving father, a cherished grandfather, great grandfather and a dear friend to many.
Antonio proudly served in the Italian military before immigrating to Canada in 1955. With just $20 in his pocket, he came to marry the love of his life, Rita, and to build a new future together. His nieces and nephews fondly remember him as “the legendary uncle”—a hero who opened the pathways for the entire Schibono family to follow.
Antonio and Rita began their careers at Savage Shoes in Preston, Ontario, before deciding to settle permanently in Canada after several trips back to Italy. In 1971, they opened Tony’s Pizza and Spaghetti House, marking the beginning of a successful 25-year journey in the hospitality industry. Together, they later launched Tony’s Cucina, becoming the first to introduce fresh-made sauces and pasta to the Cambridge region. Over the years, they built three beloved restaurants, enriching their community with warmth, generosity, and culinary excellence. After a lifetime of hard work and dedication, Tony and Rita retired in 1994, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire.
Antonio leaves behind his children: Loredano Schibono (Enilda), Ivana Schibono, and Tony Schibono; his grandchildren: Jason Paul Schibono (Amy), Ryan Lee Schibono, Derek Wesley Sharp, Wesley Robert Wood (MacKenzie), Brandon Jonathan Wood, and Maximus Antonio Schibono; and his great-grandchild, Claire Anne Schibono. He is also survived by his brother, Luigi Schibono, and his sister, Paolina Carnevale.
He peacefully passed away at Lisaard House held in the love of his cherished grandson Derek Sharp, who was faithfully by his side. A bond that was among his greatest joys in life.
