Richard is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Francien Hiebendaal (née Oomens); his children, Marc Hiebendaal, Brenda McCrae (Brian) and Christopher Hiebendaal (Jessica); and his cherished grandchildren: Caleb (20), Coleson (16), Abigail (11), Charlie (12), and Maya (9). He was predeceased by his parents, Jannetje and Christiaan Hiebendaal.
Richard passed away peacefully at home, leaving behind a legacy of steadiness, integrity, and quiet strength that will live on in all who knew him. While his presence will be deeply missed, we take comfort in knowing that Richard has completed his journey home to the Lord he faithfully served, now resting in everlasting peace.
Born in Holland, Richard built his life on a foundation of hard work, perseverance, and unwavering values. He was known for his level-minded nature—never swayed by unnecessary drama, always grounded and steady. Those close to him often described him as the calm in the storm, someone whose steady presence brought reassurance and clarity.
Honesty was at the heart of who Richard was. He believed deeply in doing what was right, even when it went unnoticed. His word was something you could rely on, and his sincere, straightforward manner earned the respect of colleagues, friends, and family alike.
In 1985, Richard and his wife began a courageous new chapter, bringing their young family to Canada when he was entrusted with managing the North American division of the company he worked for. Though it meant leaving behind his parents, Richard embraced the opportunity with optimism, faith, and determination. In doing so, he gave his family the gift of new beginnings and built a life in Canada that they would all come to cherish.
Richard’s faith was always present, quietly shaping his actions and values. He demonstrated his beliefs through kindness, firm principles, and genuine respect for others. His unwavering trust in God’s goodness was evident throughout his life, and his family finds comfort knowing he is now at peace with the Lord he served with humble devotion.
Richard was deeply devoted to his family. As a husband, he was steadfast and supportive throughout 52 wonderful years of marriage—a milestone that would have reached 53 in just two months. His unwavering partnership with his beloved wife was a testament to their enduring love, mutual respect, and shared journey through life’s joys and challenges. As a father, he led by example—patient, dependable, and quietly proud. Nothing delighted him more than watching his children and grandchildren grow, learn, and find their own paths. His grandchildren, especially, were the joy of his later years.
Those who knew Richard admired his dignity, kindness, and the honest, gracious way he lived his life. He was never one to dominate conversations; instead, he was thoughtful and attentive, preferring to listen with care rather than speak. His quiet generosity was felt in the way he always offered support, guidance, and understanding, making things better in subtle but meaningful ways.
While Richard will be deeply missed, his influence lives on in the values he instilled, the memories he shaped, and the family he cherished. His steady hand, honest heart, and faithful spirit leave a lasting imprint on everyone fortunate enough to have known him.
May he rest in peace, safely home with the Lord.
