As a youth, he excelled at sports, then later curling. He was a fiercely competitive bridge and Scrabble player, enjoyed classical music and read widely. In his final years, he routinely completed the daily newspaper crossword puzzle.
Uncomplaining, in spite of age-related health issues, David adored babies, and especially loved seeing his grandchildren. Extended family remember his zeal for parlour games followed by a tasty meal and wine.
A retired Canadian Tire Dealer, he relied on native intelligence, ambition, charm and chutzpah to live a rich full life – exceeding expectations for one with limited formal education and a difficult family upbringing.
Pop, Papa, Grandpa, Dad, was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen Howey Walls, and is missed by extended family and his daughter, Kathy Walls (Karl), son, Andrew Walls (Janice), grandchildren, Jennifer Ball, Laurel-Jane Ball (1987), Meredith Walls-Butler (Ryan), Cory Walls, Everett Walls, Beatrice Houston-Gilfoy (Jamie), Martha Houston (Russell Squires), Emma Houston (Ryan Rousseau), Vija Brazus, Andris Brazus, Laura Brazus and great-grandchildren Owen Savory (Kalyn), Olivia Savory, Nate Walls, Heidi Walls, Eloise Houston-Rousseau, Roux Asch, Ilona Burshaw, Evelina Burshaw and Izabella Burshaw.
Family is deeply grateful for the caring staff at The Village of Wentworth Heights, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Juravinski Hospital and St. Peter’s Hospital. A private celebration of David’s life will be held at a later date.
