Survived by her sister, Bep van de Waerdt (late Mees), and special niece, Hillie (late Ab) both of Holland.
Gerry moved to Canada from Holland in 1953 with her husband and two daughters. Upon arriving, they soon added two more daughters to the family. Gerry was an amazing housewife who took pride in the love she gave to her family. She was a fantastic cook, an even better baker, kept her house spotless, and made beautiful clothing for her girls while they were growing up. She loved to be in her garden and certainly enjoyed being amongst the flowers. She loved to travel and they did so into her eighties. She had the kindest heart and the sweetest demeanor. She was very fair, and never had anything negative to say about anyone or anything. She could find the positive side of anything!
Gerry and Thys shared a beautiful love story. Despite Gerry developing dementia, Thys was able to care for her at home until the day he died, just 6 days before their 73rd wedding anniversary. They could often be found sitting beside one another on the couch, holding hands. She may have become forgetful, but she always asked for him by name.
In her final hours, she was surrounded by the love of her daughters and granddaughter. She is now at Peace and reunited with Thys and Elly.
We will forever be grateful to the kind, competent and patient staff at Hilltop Manor in Cambridge for their compassionate care for the past 17 months.
