Lloyd Frederick Gower passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, August 22, 2013 at Cambridge Memorial Hospital in his 83rd year after a yearlong struggle with brain cancer. He is survived by his loving wife Linda, his children Michele (Mike Hart) of Thornhill, Michael (Tammy Blackwell) of Cambridge and Melanie (Les Perriman) of Ayr, and by his granddaughters Meaghan and Jessica Perriman. Also remembered and sadly missed by his sisters Marilyn Carr (David) of St. Lambert, Quebec and Diane Dent (Peter) of Hamilton, and by his brother-in-law Stephen DeMorest (Carole) of Port Perry, as well as thirteen nieces and nephews scattered around the world.
Retired from Midland Doherty/Midland Walwyn (1990) and from Rae & Lipskie Investment Counsel (2008), Lloyd was an active volunteer within the community supporting organizations such as Trinity Anglican Church, Cambridge Memorial Hospital Foundation, Grand River Conservation Authority, Crime Stoppers of Waterloo Region, the PC Parties of Ontario and Canada, One Voice One Vision, Wilfrid Laurier University, Renison College (University of Waterloo) and Probus .
Life on the farm kept Lloyd grounded. He and Linda raised sheep for 12 years, and their lamb was known throughout the region. There was nothing Lloyd enjoyed more than walking out back in the woods, and if he had another person or a dog for company, so much the better. He was an avid hunter and happily rewarded the neighbouring farmers with venison for allowing him to hunt on their properties. He loved sailing and went on many adventures along the rivers of Europe and through the Mediterranean with his sailing buddies and captains Lonny Holland and John Morton. Occasionally Linda was invited to go along, as long as she didn’t cramp the boys’ style! In 1997, Lloyd participated in the flotilla sailing along the St. Lawrence River to Newfoundland in celebration of the 500th anniversary of Cabot’s landfall in that province. He was thrilled to be a part of this event. Lloyd was also a big supporter of the Ayr-Paris Band outdoor concerts and loved attending the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Pops concert series.
The family would like to thank Dr. Jay Baker and the 3rd floor nursing staff at Cambridge Memorial Hospital who helped to make Lloyd’s last days more comfortable.
