Pete was born in Toronto, moved to New Hamburg as a child, then to Southgate Road in Galt, where he became a "west-sider". Pete loved to fix things, and as a twelve-year-old, took apart his father's brand-new lawnmower just to see how it worked, and then put it together again.
In 1976 Pete started his business, Coutts Mechanical Service, which he operated for 36 years, building many loyal and long-standing customer relationships. He will be fondly remembered for his friendly smile and willingness to help.
You could always be sure to find Pete in his garage, which was always a place of pure happiness for him.
Pete loved cars. In 2000, he finished the restoration of his 1964 Chevy Impala SS Convertible and took it on the road through 13 states to attend the Hot August Nights car show in Reno, Nevada. It was the trip of a lifetime.
He loved the simplicity of a cold beer, hot cup of coffee and of course, onions.
His love for roller skating led him to meet his soul mate Sally. Together, they began a new journey resulting in becoming each other’s greatest love.
His fondness for the outdoors resulted in a passion for fishing, water skiing, cycling and off-road mountain biking.
Pete is predeceased by his parents Ken and Fern Coutts, and his brother-in-law Bill Goertzen. He is survived by his beloved wife Sally Stewart (Atkinson), his sister Patti Goertzen of Cambridge, and his brother Paul and his wife Pat of Springfield, Nova Scotia, and nieces Laura Van Landschoot and Marci Coutts.
Pete was the much-loved "spousal father" of Craig Stewart (Carla Lindemann), Ian Stewart (Jessica Persaud) and Anna Stewart.
Pete was a devoted “Poppy” to Lily, Owen, Logan, Simone, Chris and Jenn. They will miss him dearly.
Pete had a special relationship with the Wardle family, who played a large role in his life for a very long time, and whom he loved.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported Pete over the past year-and-half, including his wonderful and caring doctor Andrew Smith, all the nurses, doctors and support staff at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, the B3 team, Pete and Sally's families, and all those who called or visited.
Thanks to his wonderful friend Billy Hall, and the Motor Lords Car Club, and Susie Schmidt and Shirley Mitchell who were so helpful and supportive.
Arrangements handled by Coutts Funeral Home, Cambridge.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the spring.
