Gene Schweitzer

Gene Schweitzer, age 82, of Mechanicsburg, PA, died July 28, 2013 at LifeCare Hospital after a brief illness. He was the loving husband of Lucy W. “Kate” Stevens for 31 years.

He was born April 27, 1931, in Glencross, South Dakota to the late Peter S. and Frances Thomas Schweitzer.

Raised on the family ranch on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, Gene was a teacher in a one room school before starting his professional career with the U.S. Army at the Black Hills Army Depot in Igloo, SD. He later moved to the Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg, PA, the Army Procurement and Supply Agency, Joliet, IL, and the Army Material Command, Alexandria, VA. He returned to Pennsylvania as the traffic manager of the Army Security Assistance Center, New Cumberland, PA and ended his career as the director of Transportation and Traffic Management at the Army’s Armament, Munitions and Chemical Command (AMCCOM) headquarters, Rock Island, IL where he was responsible for the shipment of armaments and munitions to troops worldwide. Gene retired to Mechanicsburg, PA in 1987.

In addition to his wife, Gene is survived by a son Lyle Schweitzer (Jane), a daughter Joleen Schweitzer (Jim Derham) six grandchildren, Michael Derham, Jared Schweitzer (Carrie), Christopher Derham (Rebecca), Mark Schweitzer (Kristin), Kathy Derham and Rebecca Knoster (Jason), six great-grandchildren, Jonathan Schweitzer, Luke Schweitzer, Malachi Schweitzer, Liam McCaffrey, Matthias Schweitzer and Thad Schweitzer. He is also survived by three brothers, Leroy Schweitzer (Girlie), Bernard Schweitzer (Anna) and Claude Schweitzer (Jill) and two sisters, Theresa Bieber (Bob) and Della Jensen (Dwayne), a niece Jan Smith, nephew Terry Wilson and two special care givers, Danni Rorapaugh and Teresa Reinhardt Yost.

A funeral service will be conducted at Neill Funeral Home, 3401 Market Street, Camp Hill, PA on Thursday, August 1, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. by Rev. Mark Schweitzer. Interment will follow in Rolling Green Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service and other times at the residence.
