Richard “Dick” D. Hawkins, 84, of Upper Allen Twp. passed away Friday, July 19, at LifeCare Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Gowanda, NY, south of Buffalo, on October 22, 1928, he was the son of the late Katherine S. and Perry D. Hawkins.
Mr. Hawkins attended schools in Gowanda, NY, Cleveland, OH, and Huntington, IN, graduating in 1947 from Hornell NY High School. His father held many notable positions on the Erie and Erie-Lackawanna Railroad.
Mr. Hawkins also attended the Rochester Institute of Technology and SUNY Oswego to obtain credits towards his teaching certification.
Surviving are his wife Phyllis Ibach Hawkins, five daughters, Beckie Curtis (Stockton, CA), Bonnie Hoffman (Gary, Houston, TX), Patricia Maloney (Michael, LaFayette, NY), Dianne Steinke (Greg, Clintonville, WI), Cathleen Fournier (Rome, NY), and Lauren Smith (San Diego, CA), two sons Robert Neth (Marda, Clifton Springs, NY) and Richard Neth (Elaine, Avon, NY), fourteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, father-in-law Kenneth E. Ibach (Florence, NJ), and brother-in-law Kenneth J. Ibach (Chloe, Columbus, NJ).
Mr. Hawkins was a Certified New York State Teacher of Photolithography for 23 years at the Livingston-Steuben-Wyoming BOCES, Mt. Morris, NY. He was honored there for his Excellence in Teaching. Prior to his teaching career, he worked as a printer for The Alfred Sun and other publications in the Hornell, NY, area.
Mr. Hawkins had been a member of the Harrisburg Civil War Round Table, the Gettysburg Chorus, and the Emmitsburg Chorus. He was a current member of the Senior Center at Mechanicsburg Place.
Burial will take place in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Town of York, Livingston County, NY, along with a brief family and friends memorial service on Wednesday, July 24, 2013at 10:00 AM.
Allenview Mechanicsburg neighbors and friends will celebrate his life also at a time and place nearby to be announced.
