Long-time Campbell River resident Lorne Anderson passed away peacefully at home on January 16, 2026, leaving a significant legacy as a local leader, husband, dad, grampa and friend to many. Known for his kind, accepting nature and his steady, thoughtful presence, Lorne made people feel welcome wherever he went.
Lorne was born on March 10,1939 in New Westminster to Jennie and Andy Anderson. His childhood and young adult years were spent in the Duncan/Lake Cowichan area, where he graduated from Cowichan High in 1957 and had fond memories of summers spent playing baseball and floating down the Cowichan River.
Lorne met his wife Sandra Cameron through mutual friends in Victoria while she was attending nurses training. They wed in 1962, soon welcoming Lori (1964), Brian (1966) and Carol (1970). The young family lived in Duncan, Vanderhoof and Dawson Creek in the late 60’s and early 70s as Lorne pursued a career in local government administration. Throughout these years, his humour, patience and open-mindedness helped him build strong relationships in every community they called home.
Lorne was appointed Chief Administrative Officer for the District (now City) of Campbell River in 1973. Reporting to mayor and council, he was responsible for all municipal departments, including public works, planning and finance. Throughout his tenure, which lasted until his retirement in 1996, Campbell River nearly tripled in population, driving infrastructure projects and planning for future growth. The job was busy, demanding and rewarding. Lorne’s legacy lives on as Campbell River remains a vibrant and thriving community.
Cementing his local legacy, Lorne was a key member of the volunteer group that developed the Storey Creek Golf Course, recognized as one of BC’s finest. Along with other founding members, Lorne worked to secure financing and land and select a designer and builder. The course opened in 1989, and Lorne remained active for many years on the Board of Directors as well as with the Men’s and Senior’s Clubs.
Lorne highly valued his many great and enduring friendships and was loved by many. He and Sandy were fixtures at the golf course and active participants in local social life. When they weren’t golfing, they curled, bowled, travelled and skied and in later years were frequent denizens of “The Office”, aka Chances Casino.
Lorne was pre-deceased by his wife Sandy in April 2023, his parents Jennie and Andy, and his brother Jim in 2021. He is survived by his children Lori, Carol, Brian (Liz) and his granddaughters Sophia and Madeline as well as by his sister Judy (Gord), Sandy’s brother Ted (Sandy) and his niece and nephews. He was an outstanding husband and parent and a VERY proud grandfather.
Lorne was truly one of the good guys and will be greatly missed.
A celebration of life will be held on April 4th at the Eagles Hall in Campbell River at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
