She was born in Germany on Dec 27, 1934. The family survived WW2 despite being Displaced Persons within their own country. This early experience shaped the rest of her life, and her stubborn German resilience was well known by all who knew her.
Gerda went on to marry her husband Otto in 1958 and emigrated to Canada the same year. They lived in Ottawa ONT, Ladner BC as well as Campbell River and had two children together. Gerda working as a hair dresser and later with Otto (a baker) at Plaza Bakery in CR.
Gerda is predeceased by Otto, their two daughters - Jeanette and Yvette, and her daughter by choice Brenda Yule.
She is survived by her son, also by choice, Darcy, grand children Kelly (Don) and Gillian (Eckley) as well as great grandchildren Roman , Hunter, Zander, Gideon, Seth and Freya.
Gerda will be forever remembered for her warm laugh, gentle hugs, and amazing food. She could be often found knitting socks, hats, and slippers for many in need, and baking all sorts of treats for her friends and neighbours. Her secret cookie recipe will be surely missed as well. We love you Oma.
Donations in her name could be made to the CR Hospice or the CR hospital aux.
A memorial service will be held later this month. While internment will be held this coming summer.
We would like to thank Dr. Ramsay and all the staff of Unit 3a at North Island Hospital Campbell River for all of their care, attention and professionalism.
