

Basil Winston McManus, 83, of Hidden Hills, California passed away peacefully on June 23, 2013. He was born June 14, 1930 to Edward James McManus and Julia Winston McManus in Taunton, Massachusetts. He was a graduate of Benedictine High School in Richmond, Virginia in 1947. He served in the Navy from 1948 to 1949, and again from 1951 to 1952. After his honorable discharge, he graduated from Medical College of Virginia Pharmacy School in 1955 and then received his M.D from the Medical College of Virginia in 1959. He married Maritza Garrido-McManus in Richmond, Virginia on September 10, 1960, and they moved to California. He completed his residency in anesthesiology at the Los Angeles County General Hospital in 1962. He then started his career as an anesthesiologist at West Hills Hospital in Canoga Park, California, where he worked for more than 30 years. "Mac" was beloved by friends and colleagues who remember him for his storytelling, positive outlook, and good humor.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Mary Elizabeth McManus and his brother Edward Francis McManus. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Maritza; his children Monica, Drew, and Sean; his son-in-law Ken and daughter-in-law Jen; his grandchildren Spencer and Dylan; and two nieces and a nephew.
