It is with an extremely heavy heart that I announce the passing of Lt Col Denise Edwards. Col Edwards joined CAP as a 14 year old and remained active for almost 60 years. Col Edwards served the squadrons, group and wing in many roles, including that of squadron commanders of Hawker Senior Squadron 128, Safety Officer and Emergency Services Officer in Los Angeles County Group 1 and as the Emergency Services Training Officer for the California Wing. Col Edwards worked tirelessly in the area of emergency services as Ground Team Leader, Mission Pilot, Observer and Scanner, Mission Safety Officer and Incident Commander. In 2010, Col Edwards was recognized as the California Wing and Pacific Region Ground Team Member of the Year and in 2011, received the Exceptional Service Award for her lifetime of service to CAP. Just a few months ago, although in frail health, Col Edwards came out and assisted in the training of ground team members during an exercise that observed by U.S. Congressman Tony Cardenas.
Col Edwards dedication to public service went far beyond her work with CAP having served as a firefighter for the United States Air Force, an instructor in search & rescue for the National Search & Rescue School, FEMA and the American Red Cross. Many CAP and non-CAP members learned first aid, CPR and advanced Incident Command techniques from Col Edwards courses. Col Edwards was also a trauma nurse and wilderness medical expert among her many other talents.
Col Edwards will be missed by all who knew her.
Services are pending and more information will be sent to the wing when arrangements have been finalized.
