He is now in the presence of the Lord!
Chuck was born May 22, 1929 in Danville, IL to Harry & Anna (Nellie) Runyan. Chuck graduated from Danville High School and immediately enlisted into the U.S. Air Force in August 1947. He served his country with distinction, was honorably discharged in August 1951, and continued as a civilian instructor for the Air Force from 1951 – 1953.
It was during his duty that he met his wife, Dolores Bond of Independence, IA at a USO function in St. Louis, MO. Engaged in December 1951 and married October 5, 1952, Chuck’s passing was just 6 days shy of their 63rd Wedding Anniversary.
In 1953, Chuck elected to continue his education at the University of Illinois where he studied Electrical Engineering, and graduated in June 1957 with Honors and a Bachelors of Science degree. Following graduation, he was interviewed by, and accepted a job offer from the Hughes Aircraft Company in Los Angeles, CA. Chuck, Dolores, #1 son Bill (3 year old), and Mark (in the womb), packed the car and traveled west to California, landing in Culver City. Two years later, they purchased their first new home in West Hills in the San Fernando Valley, where they raised their family and have lived for the past 55 years.
While working for Hughes, Chuck elected to continue his education, receiving dual Master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering and Executive Management from UCLA. Chuck worked for Hughes Aircraft for 35 years, was a leader in the design & operation of Radar Systems, which have been implemented in our military equipment, vehicles & aircraft for years. Chuck had many friends from his days at Hughes, many of which have passed, but he still liked to reminisce about the ‘Good Ole Days’, their experiences and accomplishments which they all achieved.
Chuck was grounded by his Christian faith, became a member of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, West Hills, where he worshipped and watched his children all receive their confirmation. Chuck was involved for many years with the church, holding numerous positions: President of the Congregation, Deacon, Usher, Reader, and Chairman of the Fundraising/Building Committee for the construction of the now main sanctuary and adjoining classrooms.
Over the years Chuck and Dolores were involved in many activities, especially UCLA athletics, having attended many years of football and basketball games and events, all the while being strong supporters of the university. They traveled the world, taking 15 ‘Crystal’ cruises to every corner of the globe, seeing the sights, living the high life they so richly deserved. After their traveling days, Chuck & Dolores took on the role of ‘World’s Best Grandparents’, as they followed their three granddaughters’ growth all along the way, attending every event they could fit in, from sporting events, recitals, college softball games, graduations, and weddings.
Chuck also took pride in his home and yard. The care he took of his yard showed the beauty which was a mere reflection of him, from his many fruit trees to his tomato gardens. In addition, he enjoyed all the family gatherings, swim parties and Bar-B-Q’s, especially swinging with Dolores on their patio swing, feeding the squirrels and birds. He would say, “They all need to eat too!”
Like fine wine, Chuck got better with age. His wisdom, his lessons, his attitude, his optimism, his kindness, his generosity, and his love were the trademarks of his being, and were shared by many. He was a remarkable man, a great man. He was a great husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Chuck will be severely missed by all who engaged in his presence.
We will forever miss you!
Chuck is survived by his wife, Dolores; their three children – William and his wife Louise Runyan, Mark Runyan, Nancy and her husband Rick Rentler; three grandchildren – Meredith and her husband Alex Fierro, Amelia Runyan, Caitlin and her husband Nicholas Child; and two great-grandchildren – Brewer Fierro, Camden Fierro.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, 4 sisters and 3 brothers.
After 86 wonderful years, Chuck will be laid to rest at Oakwood Memorial Park, Chatsworth, CA.
Funeral services will be held at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 23838 Kittridge Street, West Hills, CA 91307 on Monday, October 12, 2015 with Pastor Bryan Woken officiating. Viewing at 11:30 a.m.; Service at 12:00 p.m. Graveside service & reception to follow.
