Hi, my name is Phoenix Nicholson. I am the grandson of Jimmy. I was not aware of this site until now.  At this point in time, it’s been a little less than a year since my grandfather’s passing. Truth be told, I did not know my grandfather all that well. I wish I did, but I don’t. This is a prime example of why we have to learn about and love the people close to us while we still can. I’m learning about his life only now after he’s gone, when I should have learned it from him. 
I have seen almost every message put up on this thread, and I want to thank you guys for the support and care you’ve shown. Of course, there is a large chance this message will never be seen, so if it is, thank you for continuing my grandfather’s memory.
The photo I have attached may have been used already by my family, but in case it hasn’t, here it is.

I'm still processing the events of today's celebration of Jimmy's life. It was a truly beautiful and a fitting tribute to a remarkable man. The service at St. Mel  Catholic church was incredibly moving; the space felt regal and serene, perfectly reflecting Jimmy's spirit. The singer's performance was breathtaking, a testament to Jimmy's lifelong passion for music. The eulogy eloquently captured not only his musical contributions to the jazz world but also the depth of his character and the impact he had on so many lives. I was particularly touched by his cousin's recollections of Jimmy's Louisiana roots and his academic achievements. The stories shared highlighted Jimmy's generosity, his constant appreciation for his fans, and the kindness he extended to everyone he encountered.

Meeting Jimmy's family afterward was a poignant experience. His daughter and son were both incredibly gracious, and his wife displayed remarkable strength and composure, radiating a quiet gratitude for the love and support shown to them.  Reggie Waddell and the rest of the big band members served as pallbearers, a fitting honor for their longtime friend and colleague. The mahogany casket, draped in white, was a symbol of both Jimmy's legacy and the peaceful transition he has made. The opportunity to offer a personal farewell at the casket was deeply moving, though I must confess, the emotions were overwhelming, as  my kinship and musical background dates back to 1995 when I was one of the earlier vocalist to front his incredible big band.  And what an honor it has been to perform and learn from one of jazz’s greatest doctors of music,  

It is difficult to express the surreal feeling that remains. Jimmy's laughter, his friendship – these are things I will deeply cherish and miss. I know you all shared a special bond with him, and I extend my heartfelt condolences during this difficult time. Please know that you are in my thoughts.

You have been left a gracious legacy.  We will forever remember Jimmy.  He was a multi talented soul.  I can imagine him teaming up with Gabriel and blowing that trumpet and maybe even singing  that old “What You Gonna Do When The World is on Fire?”

In 2008, my husband Alvin and I traveled to Louisiana the week of our 1 year wedding Anniversary. This would be Alvin’s first time meeting my family outside if my father, Eddie Lee Ralph, Sr., and brother, Eddie, Jr. After visiting my Mom’s folks in Monroe, we drove out to Chatham to visit Dad and family on his side. Dad decided we would do a driving tour around Chatham to stop and visit whoever was home. While in the car, Dad mentioned to Al that he has a cousin in L.A. that is a musician and runs a big band, and asked Al if he knew Jimmy McConnell. Al said, “Yes! I have played in his band many times over the years. So wait, Jimmy is my cousin now? Oh! He’s gonna get a kick out of hearing this!”  It too was my first time hearing that Jimmy and I were related, and that closely. To know that my Dad was the older cousin and used to babysit him and his siblings when they were younger. Over the years since, we’ve grown to know and love my cousin and have great fun times at the shows. I would often call to check in him and he poured his wisdom and advice into me and his funny sense of humor also came with that. Like my Dad, he too was a no nonsense, did not mince his words, told you exactly what he meant without fluff. I may not have wanted to hear it, but I needed to hear it. I respected him as I knew he cared. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t care to tell me.  I miss our chats. I will forever carry my memories of him with me.

Dear Jimmy, 💖🙏Rest in Blissful Peace my Dear Friend, and Big Band, Trio, Quartet, Quintet, & Sextet Leader.  We've graced Many of Band Stands together. You've always treated me as one of Your Favorite Singers. I've learned a great deal from you. My Sincere Condolences to Your Family & Loved Ones.  Say Hi in Heaven to Band Manager Ben Middleton and All those who have preceded you.  The Heavens are Dancing to your band's music as we speak. ☺️💖

These are the pictures taken over the years Jimmy directing my path in the school of Big Band Music. How to tape and number my charts, knowing how to follow the Band and read the symbols on my charts and knowing when to come back in! Staying on key (he would definitely let me know when I was flat, especially on the song"I Left My Heart in San Francisco "! To finally stepping out on that stage, finally getting it and seeing the whole beautiful picture of it all, thanks to Jimmy McConnell.

Christmas 2024, not as festive, yet filled with joy

Dear family, my condolences during this difficult time. My second cousin Jimmy was supportive in my life since I was a boy, teaching me the string bass, coming to my college graduation and attending my play. His presence on earth will truly be missed. RIP cous.
