Oman was born in Cienfuegos, Cuba on September 7, 1938. He was the eldest son and had twin brothers, Tony and Nick. They were raised in a very close-knit family with his mother, Inez, stepfather, Nicolas, his maternal grandparents , as well as his cousins, Abelardo and Neyda Bequer.
In July of 1962, Oman immigrated to the United States to flee Castro’s communist regime. He went on to marry the love of his life, Maria (Merita) Bardina, and they settled in Los Angeles where they raised four daughters—Margarita, Betty, Vicky, and Cristy.
Oman worked for Verizon (formerly known as GTE and Frontier Communications) as an electrical engineer for over 50 years. He enjoyed traveling all over the country with Merita, their daughters, Merita’s parents, her sister, Concha and niece, Maribel, as well as Oman’s cousin Abelardo and his family in their matching RV’s while their children were growing up. In later years, Oman continued to travel with Merita, their daughters, grandchildren, and extended family all over the world where they all created beautiful everlasting memories. He was the world’s biggest Dodger fan, intently watched all the games on TV, and knew all the players’ stats. He was especially proud of his Dodger players who were of Latin or Cuban descent, such as Teoscar Hernandez, Miguel Rojas, Kike Hernandez, and Andy Pages.
Oman was an exceptional man, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend who showed unconditional love for his family. He was extremely proud of his Cuban heritage and taught us all so much about our culture, as well as being grateful to his adopted country for providing amazing opportunities for his children and grandchildren. Our Pops was completely selfless and full of love and would do anything for his family and friends.
He is greatly missed but will remain forever in our hearts forever.
