James was a resilient man, he’d beaten non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, lung cancer and battled lung disease for the majority of his adult life. Time and time again he showed strength, determination, and always found the good in tough situations.
Born on September 12, 1946 in Boston, MA. James was the second son born to the former Lewis and Sherrie (Feinberg) Sherman and the younger brother to Gerald “Jerry” Sherman, where they resided in Newton, MA. Growing up he attended Newton North High School where he played football, one of his happiest joys. Upon graduating, he enlisted in the Airforce where he served for 3 years in Texas, Illinois, Alaska, Japan, and Vietnam where he served in the Vietnam War with the 5010th Strategic Air Command (SAC). He was in the fighter wing group that flew B-52’s as well as Huey UH-1 helicopters. This changed his life forever, but we are forever grateful for his service.
He was the beloved husband to the late Leslie J. (Keller) Sudalter-Sherman. Together they grew a beautiful home in Norwood, MA, where he enjoyed sunbathing by the pool, gardening, and always having a house project “to do”. Professionally, James spent his time running a non-profit he founded for domestic violence victims. He owned a furniture business in Brighton, MA, while expanding his real estate portfolio. Along with his philanthropic endeavors - he had one of the biggest hearts.
His family and friends were his brightest lights in life. A devoted father to Megan and Matthew Sherman and to his stepdaughter Lauren Sudalter-Vitiello. His son, Matt was also his best friend, they had unconditional love and support for one another. His daughter Megan was his comfort, they didn’t go a day without speaking and they shared such a special bond. Lauren and Jimmy shared their love of antiques. His grandchildren Justin, G.G. and J.J. brought him so much joy in life. They loved their Grumpy so much.
He is survived by his son, Matthew, daughter-in-law Lara, and grandson J.J., his daughter Megan and her fiancé Tony Raymond, Maryanne Gaudet the mother of Matt and Megan, his stepdaughter Lauren, son-in-law John and grandson Justin, along with the extended Keller, Kassabian, Vitiello, and Gaudet families and many friends he loved as family.
James was caring, kind, big hearted, and loved to host. He cared for folks like they were his own, while making an impact on every life he touched.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 30th at 10:00am at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 475 Washington Street, Canton, MA, with interment at Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors at the Sherman residence beginning at 1:00 on Tuesday.
