Linda Blocker of Stoughton MA, previously of Sharon MA, passed away peacefully on March 3rd, 2026 at 78 years of age. Daughter of Lorraine (Silverman) and Alvin Blum. Loving wife of David Blocker of 51 years. Beloved mother of Zachary (wife Josepha) and Elizabeth (wife Jennifer). Cherished grandmother of Ryan and Leo Blocker, and Molly and Caleb Doubilet-Blocker. Sister of Betty Levitov and Mindy Gammon (z”l).
Linda was born in Baltimore MD on December 26 1947. She was raised there in a unique situation where 3 couples, Alvin and Lorraine Blum, Lenny and Janice Gold and Hyman and Shirley Berg became such good friends that they built houses next door to each other in the “Pill Hill” neighborhood of Northwest Baltimore. Linda called the adults “Aunt” and “Uncle” and considered their 6 offspring (3 per family) her “next-door-neighbor-brothers and sisters”. In effect she was raised by 6 parents and had a total of 8 siblings. The parents got together for coffee most nights, many Saturday lunches, countless celebrations and a yearly trip to the Maryland-Delaware shore in the summer for a week. When Linda decided to marry David and they agreed to settle in the Boston area, Linda made it part of the pre-nuptial verbal agreement that they would visit her families in Baltimore 4 weeks every year, 2 around Christmas and New Years and 2 in the summer, including beach time. They honored this agreement until Linda’s health made travel difficult.
Linda was a take-charge person. Throughout her life, when she felt she had been dealt with unfairly, quoting her mother who always said “Go to the top!” she would find out who was in charge and call them personally to lodge a complaint. It was amazing how often this strategy was successful. She met David when they were both counselors at a summer camp near Cleveland OH in 1969 and quickly fell in love with David. She knew they were meant for each other long before David caught on. They dated a few times in 1968-69 when David returned to finish his undergraduate years after a leave of absence and Linda went to Emerson College for graduate school. They became a serious couple in 1969 and dated a long time before finally marrying June 16, 1974. Friends jokingly called them, noting their ultra-long courtship, “the Blum-Blockers”. Throughout these years Linda once again patiently waited for David to jump on board.
Linda’s three passions in life were theatre, music and reading, primarily mystery writers. Her reading was inspired by her older sister Betty’s passion. She loved Dick Francis novels so much she opened a correspondence with him to express her admiration for his works which lasted until his death. Originally wanting to be a doctor, she enrolled at U of Maryland in Nursing in 1965 and made it clear she wanted to be pre-med. The college denied this so she went to the top and met with the Dean to protest: he told her the college did not enroll any women in pre-med because “they would just get married, have babies, and stop working to raise the children.” Stymied but undeterred, to her parents’ dismay she made a 180-degree turn and became a technical theatre major. She went on to earn a Masters Degree in Children’s Theatre from Emerson College and a second Masters in Lighting Design from Boston University. Sadly, she was never able fully to reach her dream of teaching theatre full time at a college or high school. Over ten years she had 4 part-time jobs at colleges where she strutted her technical theatre and directing skills, also volunteering for years in community theatre groups. She supplemented these jobs by working as a teller at several local banks and teaching Sunday School at Temple Sinai, Sharon. In the final part of her career, she earned a 3rd masters in Teaching English from Bridgewater State and spent many years at Bridgewater-Raynham High School teaching primarily freshman and sophomore English. She was a creative but tough teacher with high standards. After retiring, many times she ran into former students all of whom told her how much they had learned from her not only about literature and writing, but also about work habits and life.
Linda and David for years sang together in the Temple Sinai Choir and the Sharon Community Chorus. Their mutual love for music sustained them through many challenging periods of their lives and brought them much joy.
