After a short illness, Marilyn (Talman) Benjamin peacefully passed away on March 1, 2025. She was 97 years old. Marilyn was very accomplished – well ahead of her time for a woman of her era. She attended Bryn Mawr College then the University of Chicago, from which she graduated with a degree in International Relations. In the 1950s Marilyn became the first female editor at Business Week magazine.
She married James (Jim) Benjamin in 1951, and was happily married for over 50 years, until Jim’s death in 2004. After raising three sons, in 1976 Marilyn enrolled in Pace University law school in White Plains, NY. She passed the bar on her first attempt, and practiced law for 10+ years. Her legal practice included court-appointed child guardianship, for which she received multiple compliments.
In August of 2001 Marilyn and Jim moved from their home of 42 years in Sleepy Hollow, NY to Orchard Cove, a Continuing Care Retirement Community in Canton, MA. After Jim’s death in 2004, Marilyn continued to live at Orchard Cove until her recent passing. Marilyn is survived by her children, Neil of Waltham, MA; Tom of Haydenville, MA; daughter-in-law Mimi, brother and sister-in-law David and Donna Talman; grandchildren Ari, 21, and Mekdes, 17; and niece Martha Hertzberg. She is predeceased by her son Dan, late of Santa Monica, CA, sister Lois Johnson, and nephew Adam Talman.
Relative and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service on Monday, March 10, 2025, at 10 AM at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 475 Washington Street, Canton. Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham Street, Sharon. A Celebration of Life will be held immediately following the burial at Orchard Cove.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Marilyn's name may be made to the following:
