Marilyn was born on December 7, 1933 in Lynn, MA, to parents Jeanne and Saul Hurwitz. She was a devoted sister to Phyllis Levin and Donald Hurwitz. She married the love of her life, Stanley S. Sorkin, in 1956 and they shared 45 beautiful years together. They adored their family: son Michael and his wife Debbie, son Steven and his wife Aida, and daughter Dr. Carolyn Sorkin. Her four grandchildren: Matthew, Victoria, Melissa, and Ethan, were the light of her life.
Marilyn attended Lynn Classical High School and then graduated from the Chandler School for Women in Boston. She and Stanley lived most of their lives in Quincy, MA, where Stanley owned Quincy Medical Supply Co., Inc. They later moved to Sharon, MA, and following Stanley’s passing in 2001, Marilyn relocated to Boca Raton, FL. She then lived with her partner, Jay Slesinger, for ten years and they enjoyed traveling together. She spent the last eight years at the Sinai Residences, where she enjoyed an active, happy and fulfilling life. She had a wide circle of friends and participated in the many activities that Sinai had to offer.
Marilyn and Phyllis were identical twin sisters and extremely close. They spent every birthday together for 89 years. They were known for being impeccably dressed for any occasion. They had such a strong connection that each could anticipate the other’s thoughts and would finish each other’s sentences.
Marilyn was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2012. Despite her physical challenges, she was dedicated to living the best possible life and continued to combat the effects of her illness. Marilyn did everything she could to not let her disease hold her back. She would continue to travel to family events and remained physically active. She was involved in raising money and awareness for Parkinson’s, along with other charitable organizations.
For many years, her hobbies included tennis, golf, bridge, knitting, needlepoint and power walking. Several of these activities were spent with her family and closest companions. Marilyn shared a 70-year friendship as part of a ‘dynamic foursome' along with Carol Spiegel, Lorraine Rosenblatt, and Laura Lampert.
Marilyn loved to cook and entertain. She was known for her cherished family recipes such as apricot chicken, brisket, turkey stuffing, brownies and chocolate mousse pie. Her zest for life included a passion for candy and all desserts! Her joy was contagious.
Marilyn had a gentle soul and was always kind to those around her. She would wake up each morning wondering how she could help others. Her friends would remark that Marilyn never had an unkind word to say about anyone. Everyone who knew Marilyn adored her. Her family and friends meant the world to her. Her positive impact will long be remembered and her legacy will live on. She will be greatly missed.
