Born in Winthrop MA in 1930, he was the only son of Jeannette and Philip Shuman. Richard attended Brookline High School, Northeastern University and Boston University, and had a long and successful career in retailing before retiring at the young age of 60. He was married to his beautiful wife Roberta until her passing in 1998. Father to three boys, Philip, Jeffrey, and Brett, the family grew up in South Natick, but spent summers on Cape Cod. Richard moved to his beloved pond-front home in East Harwich full time after his retirement. It’s there that Richard, or “Dick” to his friends, lived until the end of a very fulfilling life full of love and laughter.
Dick was active in Temple Israel of Natick as a young man and a volunteer with the Cape’s “Consumer Assistance Council “ in his later years. Dick Shuman will be missed by his children, daughters-in-law, the seven grandchildren who adored him, and a close circle of long-time friends. His love of the Cape has been forever instilled in all of those who had the pleasure of spending time with him. His loyalty, integrity, devotion to family and to God, and his unique sense of humor remain an inspiration to all of us .
The funeral will be held Tuesday January 22 at 10:00am at Temple Israel of Natick, 145 Hartford Street, Natick, MA with burial to follow at the Framingham-Natick Jewish Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Dick would appreciate donations to the Harwich Conservation Trust, PO Box 101, So. Harwich, MA 02661 or to Combined Jewish Philanthropies, 126 High Street, Boston, MA 02110 or to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123 in honor or Roberta.
WE REMEMBER HIM
At the rising of the sun and at its going down,
we remember him.
At the blowing of the wind and the chill of winter,
we remember him.
At the opening of the buds and in the rebirth of spring,
we remember him.
At the blueness of the skies and in the warmth of summer,
we remember him.
At the rustling of the leaves and in the beauty of autumn,
we remember him.
At the beginning of the year and when it ends,
we remember him.
As long as we live, he too will live; for he is now a part of us,
as we remember him.
When we are weary and in need of strength,
we remember him.
When we are lost and sick at heart,
we remember him.
When we have joy we crave to share,
we remember him.
When we have decisions that are difficult to make,
we remember him.
When we have achievements that are based on his,
we remember him.
As long as we live, he too will live; for he is now a part of us.
