Ruth was the fourth in line out of the 6 children born to Ignatius and Adella (Baranauskaite) Gerviskis in Brockton. The family name was changed from Gerviskis to Greaves in 1951. She grew up in Brockton’s Lithuanian village and attended Brockton High School, and then she continued her education at the Faulkner Hospital and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1956.
In 1958, Ruth met the love of her life Gerald Goulston. Love overcame their religious differences and to the initial dismay of their parents, they eloped. Thankfully in the years that followed both families came around and accepted the union. Ruth converted to Judaism and embraced the culture for her children while also teaching them respect for Catholicism.
They bought their first house in Brockton but quickly decided on settling down in Gerald’s hometown of Stoughton. Three girls arrived, Marilyn, Ann and Deena. Ruth worked as a delivery room nurse at Goddard Hospital and then Good Samaritan Hospital for many years helping to deliver everyone’s babies!
Puerto Rico had a special place in Ruth’s heart where she enjoyed snowbirding for many years with friends and family. She also enjoyed time with her girlfriends playing mahjong or attending book club.
Ruth leaves behind her husband of 64 years Gerald Goulston. Her daughter Marilyn Gordon and husband Alfred, daughter Ann MacNaughton and husband Rob, and daughter Deena Welch; Grandsons Bradley and Geoffrey Gordon and granddaughters Amy Gordon Kester, Andrea and Isabella MacNaughton.
In addition, she is survived by great grandchildren Archie, Sonny, Lily, Jay and Liam. Also is survived by Sister-in-law Estelle Banks, Brother-in-law Joseph O’Donoghue and Sister-in-law Florence Greaves. Ruth was predeceased by her mother and father, brothers Roman (Ray) and Paul Greaves and sisters Genevieve Bornstein, Edna Gaquin, and Rita O’Donoghue.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Faulkner Hospital and the Copley Rehab for gently bringing her into the next world. We would also like to thank her nephew Evan Banks for officiating the service.
A graveside service will take place on Friday, January 24, 2025 at 1:45 PM at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham Street, Sharon MA with a gathering to follow.
